An American Tragedy That Can be Averted
by Ben Kinchlow

Another of the great American tragedies will take place on November 7, 2002.

Millions of Americans will, or rather will not, participate in a process that is granted to only a select few on the face of the earth. A Constitutionally guaranteed, government-protected right to cast a vote prompted only by, and known only to, the conscience of the voter. Consider that millions have died, millions are now dying, and millions will die in pursuit of the chance to exercise a privilege that Americans ignore regularly.

The miracle that is America could only take place under the following conditions. The American people were: (1) free to govern themselves (2) responsible enough to govern themselves Said another way, the responsibility for the continued existence of a free America rests on the people. The Declaration of Independence declares that governments "derive their just powers from the consent of the governed". That is the genius, and the secret, and the power, AND the great weakness of America. President Lincoln said, it is "government of the people, for the people, and by the people".

It is scientifically demonstrable that a vacuum cannot exist in nature. If American citizens do not participate in their God-given political system, a Republic form of government, a vacuum is created, and then government "by the people" will be replaced with government "over the people".

When the people are not allowed to govern themselves, society is held together in the way the former Soviet Union was held together for over 70 years? secret police and brute force. If free people do not govern themselves wisely and justly, but use their freedoms as a license for immorality, or as a means to vote unto themselves "truckloads of goodies" from the public treasury, then collapse and bondage are just around the corner.

Over 200 years ago, an historian named Alexander Tyler bemoaned that the "American way of life" could not endure. His reason was chillingly accurate. "People do not want to take responsibility for their own choices." He went on to say that "people will invariably hand over their sovereign responsibility and freedom to that government which promises the most benefits? A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority only votes for candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by dictatorship."

Let me interject that while we are not a pure democracy, we do enjoy a form of democratic government, a democratic republic. The citizen elects a representative to express his personal point of view. The "public servant" is there in government as a representative of the community. America, as a Republic, is undoubtedly one of the world's great civilizations. But listen to this chilling statement:

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years."

In other words, America is already 30 years overdue for collapse and dictatorship. Here's the cycle:

"Nations progress through this sequence:

from bondage to spiritual faith;

from spiritual faith to great courage;

from courage to liberty;

from liberty to abundance;

from abundance to complacency;

from complacency to apathy;

from apathy to dependency;

from dependency again into bondage" (Alexander Tyler)

The concept of America is an amazing experiment. In previous governments? the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Europeans? certain classes of nobility or landowners were given a measure of self-determination. America is the first example in human history of a nation where ALL the people were given the right to vote, to elect their own representation, and decide their own political fate. The original American dream was to entrust the great American people with their own destiny.

It's your government, your Congress, your Senators, your Representatives, your President. They work for you? so far.

Did you realize that you already spend more time working to pay your taxes than did the serfs in monarchal England?

May I encourage you, with all the earnestness I possess?. register and vote! And vote intelligently and wisely. Not along party lines, but according to the lines dictated by clear conscience. Thank you for taking time to defend America.

God bless you? and God Bless America!!
