The Truth Will Set You Free!

These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and
searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
(Acts 17:11)

Dear God!

My Church Isn't Helping My Spiritual Growth!

by Gail Ramsey

Dear God!

You know that I love you because you know everything; but I am finding it harder and harder to go to church.

The sermons are so boring and meaningless. I feel closer to you when I take a walk in the park, or pray in my own room.

What should I do?
Your son, David

Dear David,
Believe it or not, God finds religion boring too! In fact, He is repelled by meaningless rituals and finds tradition tedious.

Organized religion is dull and lifeless. It's goals and interests are, for the most part, unrelated to God. I doubt that God attends most "religious" events, (mainly because He's seldom invited,) which is probably why you sense Him closer during your walks in the park.

Jesus had few good things to say about the "religion" that ruled during His time on earth. He exposes the character of the Pharisees (religious leaders)to His disciples and the multitudes in:

Matt 23:4-6 "they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders: but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men... They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and being called "Doctor" and "Reverend".

Jesus actually goes on (in verse 13), to condemn these religious leaders: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in."

David, if when you "enter" your church you are not "allowed'(or helped)"to go in to the presence of God...find another church.

God doesn't care what building you're in! God is appalled at the walls we have built to separate ourselves from one another! But He hasn't given up on us because He loves us so much.

God sees the Church as His family; and His Word says, in Heb.10:25,that we should "not forsake the assembling of ourselves together,". But don't follow a preacher, a denomination, or your friends. Follow Jesus.

Ask Him to lead you to His people., and to the right church for you He will. Meanwhile, enjoy your private time with Him in your "own room", and during your "walks in the park".

You and your Father have a lot in common! He loves nature too. After all, He created it. He is also an incurable bird watcher. Sparrows are some of His favorites.
